Shri Balaji Maharaj appeared hundreds of years ago in his child form in a divine play between two small hills. Since the appearance of Shri Balaji Maharaj, the Mahant family has maintained the tradition of dedicated service to him for the past 15 generations. The historical background of the appearance of Shri Balaji is also connected to the ancestors of Mahant ji.

The historical background of the appearance of Shri Balaji Maharaj Ji is that Shri Mahant Ji’s ancestor Gosai Ji Maharaj saw a supernatural dream and in the dream state he got up and started walking. He did not know where he was going. In the dream state itself, he saw a unique leela that thousands of burning lamps were coming from one direction. The sounds of elephants and horses were also coming from the same direction. A very large army was coming. That army bowed down to Shri Balaji Maharaj Ji, Shri Bhairav Baba, Shri Pretraj Sarkar and returned from the same path by which the army had come.

Gosai ji Maharaj kept standing there and watching all this. He felt a little scared and then he left for his village. After going home, he tried to sleep but he could not sleep and started thinking about the same dream again and again. Then as soon as he fell asleep, he saw the same three idols and a huge temple. The same voice started coming in his ears which he had heard in the previous dream and he felt as if someone was telling him that son get up and take the responsibility of my service and my worship. I will expand my leelas and will bless with my powers for the welfare of the people in Kaliyug. Who was saying this? He did not see anything at night.

Even after this happened several times, Goswami Ji Maharaj did not pay any attention to it, then finally Shri Balaji Maharaj himself appeared and told Goswami Ji Maharaj that son, you should perform my regular service and worship.

After getting the darshan of the Lord, the next day Gosai Ji Maharaj reached the place and idols he had seen in his dream, which was situated between two hills. On reaching there, he saw that the sound of bells and drums was coming from all around but he could not see anything. After this Gosai Ji Maharaj came down, he gathered the people nearby and told them about his dream. After listening to Gosai Ji, people arranged for Bhog-Prasad.

Pleased with this, Shri Balaji Maharaj showed many miracles to those people. People went to the place where the idol of Shri Balaji Maharaj had appeared and after seeing him wondered whether it was some kind of art. Then due to people thinking like this, the idol of Shri Balaji Maharaj that had appeared on its own became invisible. Then people understood that this was the form of Balaji Maharaj himself. Then people reverently apologized to Shri Balaji Maharaj and then that idol became visible to people again.

After this, Gosai Ji started worshipping and serving Shri Balaji Maharaj regularly and Shri Balaji Maharaj started showering his blessings on the devotees. Feeling blessed by all these events and the darshan of Shri Balaji Maharaj, Gosai Ji prayed, “O Shri Balaji Maharaj, it is my karmic wish that in future my descendants and my future generations should continue to carry out the entire responsibility of worshipping you, offering food and service. Shri Balaji blessed Gosai Ji Maharaj and his descendants and since Gosai Ji, his family has been engaged in the continuous service of Shri Balaji Maharaj with full devotion and dedication.
